On Thursday 10th September 2015 at the second day of the parish annual youth retreat, the guest priest and speaker, Rev. Fr. Leonard Anyanwu, gave a talk on the topic ‘Responsibilty, a gateway to greatness’.
Fr. Leonard started by saying, God has called us to live a communal life and that each man must do his own duty to achieve greatness and live a better life.
To every man, God has given a function and to realize our function, we must try to know what we can do best and by doing our best then we will indeed achieve greatness.
For those who know God, they will always do what he has called them to do. God is love and love propels us to do good for ourselves and for others.
He went on to define responsibility as ‘a call to give account of our actions’. And as we become more responsible for our actions, God blesses us the more. God himself has given man the freewill to choose and that is why man has to be responsible. Anyone who can’t make a choice can’t be responsible, for example, babies and mentally unstable people can’t be held responsible for their actions because they can’t make a choice. Therefore, responsibility is a freewill that makes man responsible for his actions.
Responsibility can be divided into individual responsibility and collective responsibility. Individual responsibility is a personal duty or a personal freewill to make a choice while collective responsibility is a communal duty. What you do as an individual can affect the whole community, for example, the story of King Pharaoh in the bible, his singular action brought plague to his people when he refused to let the Israelites to leave Egypt and God won’t have destroyed Sodom and Gomorra if he could find 10 just men.
Responsibility imposes duties and is in different levels for example there are gender responsibilities, age responsibilities, societal responsibilities, and so on.
In conclusion, responsibility is the hall mark of greatness and can also be the hall mark of destruction too. Responsibility becomes the hall mark of greatness when we do our best in doing the right things while distractions destroys responsibility making it an hall mark for destruction.
Young people should avoid distractions and be responsible to their selves, to God, to their families and to the society at large. God has given us the choice and we MUST choice life and live Christ like lives. God bless us all as we decide to become more responsible.
For God and for youths…through Christ.
